Intrusive Thoughts #2 - High School vs. College

Welcome back to "Intrusive Thoughts" the series where I just pour my intrusive thoughts onto a blog in an attempt to get them out of my own head. Today I will be discussing briefly why I think high school actually prepares people BETTER than college does for the real world. I really only have one main point here, so this won't be a very long blog, but here we go.

I know that technically the actual classes that we take in college are supposed to prepare us to work in whatever industry our major aligns with. In that sense, yes, college gives us more information to help with living in the real world than high school does. However, once we get out of college, most of us are going to be bound to eight-hour work days with about two weeks (at least to start) of vacation per year. In college, we're taking maybe three or four classes per day, and they last maybe an hour and a half typically? There is SO much more free time in college than in the real world. We can watch movies, go to sporting events, play video games, hang out with friends, whatever we want to do.

In high school, we're in school for about six hours if I remember correctly, with a half an hour for lunch and activities that take up most of our free time afterwards. That sounds a lot more like working in the real world to me than college, where some may not even have classes on all five days of the week. I had a few semesters in college in which I had a four, even three-day week of classes.

I don't really have a big point here. I just have found that it's been a hard transition to go from having incredible amounts of free time in college to do whatever I like to having my day be accounted for from 8:30 am to 5:00pm every single day.
