Boston Bruins Reaction: Game 20 vs Washington
Game 20: March 3, 2021
Capitals 2 – Bruins 1 (SO)
This was probably one of the most entertaining 1-1 “tie” games you’ll find. Players were absolutely going crazy trying to take each other’s heads off all game, and the referees had zero control over the guys out on the ice, as evidenced by Alex Ovechkin getting away with a blatant spear between the legs of Trent Frederic that really should have resulted in Ovechkin taking an early shower.

Tuukka Rask was absolutely amazing in this game, making multiple 10 bell stops on really really good chances. My personal favorite was his two pad stack save on Ovechkin, throwing it back and keeping the puck out of the net.

Perhaps the most important save though was a cross crease stop in OT to keep the Bruins in the game before unfortunately losing in the shootout.

This was big Z’s first game back in Boston, and it just didn’t feel right that he didn’t have a Garden full of people applauding him. The Bruins put together a nice little tribute video with some fan zooms and clips from his career, but you could tell he didn’t quite know how to react. It’s not quite the same waving to an empty stadium.

Trent Frederic showed tonight that he is afraid of absolutely no one. He went chin to chin with Ovechkin on multiple occasions, and just minutes after getting released from the penalty box for his cross-checking call that was apparently as damaging as being jabbed in the groin region, he went face to face with Tom Wilson, and I’m sure he would have gladly entertained another bout with Wilson, one of the NHL’s toughest men had the refs not gotten involved.
All in all, this isn’t the type of performance I necessarily want to see from the Bruins come playoff time, but I do love the way they fought and battled for 60 minutes physically, and had it not been for an unlucky bounce that ended up on Lars Eller’s stick next to the Bruins’ goal, the boys in black and gold probably would’ve snuck out of this bloodbath with 2 points.
The Bruins and Caps play again on Friday, with the game being broadcasted at 7pm EST on NESN, and 98.5 the Sports Hub
