WandaVision Ep7 Reaction

Episode 7: Breaking the Fourth Wall

This episode was kind of a tough one for me to decide whether I was a fan of it or not at first. Most of the episode was really cool and we're definitely getting into the meat and potatoes of the show, but there were a couple things that just didn't quite resonate with me. If you haven't seen the episode yet, go check it out before reading the rest of this blog. If you're reading this after watching because you want to know if I agree with you, let's take a little trip down the page and discuss....

Alright let's start with the title. It's very clever this episode as Wanda talks to the audience a la Modern Family but it also refers to the way that Wanda's "wall" between reality and Westview is starting to fail. Very clever producers or writers or whoever decides on titles. If you came here expecting a professional review, I'm afraid that's not this website.

Next let's discuss my one real qualm with this episode. For the past 2-3 weeks we've been getting teased about a mystery astro-space engineer. If you haven't been watching various theory videos like I have, I'll fill you in. A lot of people were speculating that this may be Mr. Fantastic himself, Reed Richards, or even Captain Marvel. I never really thought this would be the case, as we know the Fantastic Four are set to join the MCU at a later date, and this wasn't supposed to be the Phase 4 kickoff, so it wouldn't make a lot of sense for them to do something like that in my opinion. However, there was a LOT of hype around this mystery character, and this episode promised to finally reveal who it was we were waiting for. What resulted was the equivalent of a dog asking to go outside for the first time and then pooping in front of the door. We were introduced to Major Goodner? who as far as I've found has no comic background or any other type of reason that we should be excited to see her. Maybe this will pay off later, but it seems like an anticlimactic moment for Marvel.

With that out of the way, let's get into what I liked, starting with the obvious...Agnes's Agatha's theme song. What a fun little tune which as my friend pointed out to me this weekend, was put on for no one because the hex is no longer broadcasting which makes it even funnier.

I love the way they finally introduced Monica as Photon. I knew this was coming, but the way they showed her fighting through the Hex, giving us an idea of how tough it is to get in if Wanda doesn't want you to. Her eyes glowing looks really cool, and I'm excited to see what her full blown hero look is going to be.

Ultimately I did enjoy this episode. I know I wrote a lot more about what I disliked than what I enjoyed, but that's just how it goes sometimes I suppose. At first I was disappointed that we didn't really learn more about Agatha and that it kind of built up to that moment just to cut it off, but I think this is an example of a time when we just need to appreciate the overall story that will come at the end of episode 9 when the season is all wrapped up. The beauty of Marvel is the overarching stories they string together, and I think that's what we're seeing here. Not every episode is going to blow our socks off, but I think when the dust is settled we're going to be mind-blown with the finale.

Until next week, be who you are, not who you think you're supposed to be.
