NHL NEW DIVISION PROPOSAL REACTION

So a tweet was released a few days ago by Pierre LeBrun suggesting that as of now, this is the proposed plan for the 2021 NHL divisional alignment.

In case you prefer a more visual look at the divisions:

I thought I'd share my thoughts as a fan of the NHL, as well as who I think are the major winners and losers of this temporary realignment.

Division 1:

Going from left to right, we'll start with the division containing my favored Boston Bruins. As a Bruins fan, I don't hate this division, but I do think it will be the most competitive for sure. I could see as many as 6 potential playoff teams in this division in the Bruins, Islanders, Rangers, Penguins, Capitals, and Flyers. The Sabres also are a team to look out for with their signing of Taylor Hall and their returning core including Jack Eichel and Rasmus Ristolainen. I, like everyone else, have no clue how the playoffs would work with this new alignment, but I would assume at least 4 teams come out of this division.

Division 2:

There's one clear winner in this division and it's the team who walked away with the largest prize last year. The Lightning should easily win this division if it holds this way, and I'd expect teams like Chicago, Detroit, and Minnesota to struggle in this division. The Predators are probably the Lightning's most threatening challengers, and I expect the Hurricanes to be a good team again this year. This is probably the most lopsided division though, and the results at the end of the season probably shouldn't surprise anyone.

Division 3:

This division will really expose what are usually the Pacific Division teams in my opinion. There are 3 Central Division teams and 5 from the Pacific, and I expect the final standings to be separated as such. I think the 3 Central teams will dominate, highlighted by the Avalanche, who are poised to dominate the NHL if they can get consistent goaltending from Philip Grubauer. The Golden Knights are the lone Pacific team that I think will bother the Central trio, and I think they have a great chance at the cup this year, but the other 4 teams will probably struggle.

Division 4: All-Canadian

The all Canadian division should be really interesting. Rivalries like Montreal and Toronto, and Calgary and Edmonton will be really exciting to watch and should result in some entertaining games. I think this division provides the best opportunity for a team that otherwise would not make the playoffs to slide in. The Maple Leafs, while a playoff regular of late, will surely relish the opportunity to avoid the Bruins or Lightning for the first two rounds if the divisions play within themselves to begin the 2021 playoffs.

Winners and Losers:

Winners - Lightning, Avalanche, Golden Knights. Maple Leafs

Losers - Coyotes, Kings, Sharks, Ducks, Wild, Red Wings, Blackhawks
