Field of Dreams Game Uniform Discussion!
Okay we have some baseball uniform news!
The MLB has just announced the uniforms that will be worn in the 2022 Field of Dreams game on Thursday between the Red and the Cubs and there is a lot to break down! This is the MLB's version of the NHL's Winter Classic in a way. The uniforms are throwbacks and the concept behind the game is to bring it back to a simpler time before guys were turning down $400 million contracts and throwing 95+ miles-per-hour. As always, huge shoutout to the guys at sportslogos.net (especially Chris Creamer) for the news and graphics.
The first thing that really jumps out to me is that both of these jerseys are white! Okay, well technically, the Cubs' jersey is cream, or ivory, or off-white (depending what you want to call it). Both jerseys are basically white though, which is probably the first time in a while that this will happen. I do not quite get why this is the case, as other-colored jerseys have existed for a while, even if that other color is just grey.
I am very intrigued to see how this matchup looks on the field and on tv. I used to hate playing in white vs white games in high school, so I cannot imagine that I will be a fan of the choice while I am watching. I thought I was going to throw a buttttt in there, but no, there is no qualifier. I think I am just not going to like watching a team in a white jersey play a team in another basically white jersey.
Isolating the two jerseys, I really like both of them. Starting with the Reds, I like that they are going back to the pinstripes, and I like the simplicity of it. I also love the logo they have chosen to use. According to Chris Creamer, this is a throwback to the uniforms that the Reds wore from 1914 to 1920. It is really cool how despite the fact that these are being made right now, the jerseys look vintage without being off-color or having weird old-fashioned piping. The hats do have that weird piping, but the jerseys still look retro without them.
I am not the biggest fan of the hat that will be worn with these jerseys, but I also do not hate it. I think this is a solid throwback for a one-game-only celebration. I do not remember what the teams did last season, but I think it would be great if they threw a little Field of Dreams game patch on the sleeve and the side of the hat to separate it from just a random throwback.
It also is one of the cutest logos I have ever seen. That usually is not a good thing when it comes to logos; typically you want them to be fierce, bold, or intimidating. With baseball though, and specifically the Cubs, I think a cute little logo of a bear holding his little baseball bat and having a grand old time is absolutely spot on. I may even consider picking up a flex fit or adjustable version of this hat at some point. I think it is so fun.
